York is a city where almost 2,000 years of history sit side by side. Founded by the Romans, later a Viking capital and then one of medieval England's great cities, its ancient walls, narrow streets and magnificent Gothic Minster still give glimpses of centuries gone by.
But York has a sweeter side to its history too. From the 19th century onwards, the city became one of Britain's great centres of chocolate and confectionery, home to famous names including Rowntree's and Terry's. KitKat, Aero and Terry's Chocolate Orange all have roots in York, helping earn it a reputation as Britain's Chocolate City.
Its later railway heritage added another chapter to the story, leaving a city shaped by Romans, Vikings, medieval merchants, railway pioneers and generations of chocolate makers.
Our skyline brings together Castle Howard, the National Railway Museum, Yorkshire Museum and York Castle Museum, capturing some of the architecture and landmarks that make York unmistakable.
