It is also a city of extraordinary engineering. Isambard Kingdom Brunel left his mark on Bristol through the revolutionary SS Great Britain, Temple Meads station and his design for the magnificent Clifton Suspension Bridge, which has become the city's unmistakable icon.
Today, Bristol combines its historic grandeur with an unmistakably independent spirit. Famous for its music, street art, creative culture and independent shops, it is also the birthplace of Banksy and the home of the pioneering trip-hop sound of Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky.
