Half-timbered buildings huddled in its quaint medieval Altstadt (old town) and cosy apple-wine taverns contrast with glass, steel and concrete skyscrapers at Frankfurt-on-the-Main (pronounced ‚am Main). Frankfurt is one of the few European cities whose skyline has an unmistakably American scale. The financial capital's glass towers rise beside the historic Römerberg and the River Main, earning it the playful nickname 'Mainhattan'.
