Britain's second city and the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, Birmingham was once known as the “Workshop of the World”.   From buttons and jewellery to engines and bicycles, its ingenious manufacturers helped transform Birmingham into one of the world's great industrial cities.

Today, the city is every bit as busy, but considerably greener. Birmingham has more miles of canals than Venice and more parks than Paris, with its waterways originally built to transport the raw materials and finished goods that powered its industrial revolution.

Birmingham is also a city of remarkable contrasts, where Victorian civic buildings and centuries-old churches sit alongside Brutalist landmarks, futuristic architecture and one of Europe's largest libraries.

And there's a little Middle-earth here too: J.R.R. Tolkien grew up in Birmingham, with the city's surrounding countryside often said to have inspired elements of The Shire.
